back on the wagon

After a good 3 month hiatus, I decided to splurge 15 bucks and head back into the World of Warcraft yesterday. This game is addictive. Some people even call it World of WarCrack! Hey now! This is me, Clay:

Clay is a Gnome Mage who just reached level 41. I made that robe, I think Clay is a snappy tailor. He's been known on occasion to cook up a curiously tasty omlet. Mostly he puts "the heat" on the bad guys, incendentally, with fire. There's some 3 and a half million people worldwide playing this game, a few thousand players is the average for the server I'm on (Llane). It is my first MMORPG and although I started out a "n00b" i like to think I have grown into something resembling "l33t" over time. The other players are pretty normal folk, most are friendly and helpful although it takes all kinds. It's totally fab and it even runs on os x. Now I need to find a way of making gold fast so I can finally buy my robot chicken.

What the hell is up with Jack Thompson? This guy is a grade-A douche, the kind of douche you'd expect in posh french lavatories but not here in the good ol' US of A. He's the lawyer who has decided to take on the video game industry for the good of our families and moral values/for publicity and a bigger paycheck. Maybe you've read something about the new Grand Theft Auto and a "hot coffee" hack that's gotten some important people up in arms. Basically the developers of Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas created a sex minigame that never made it into the final product, but for some reason was left in the code of copies sent to retail. Your in-game girlfriend, after you've put in a bunch of time going on dates and what not, asks the player to come inside for some hot coffee, and then you proceed to press left and right for a few minutes while being told that nice guys finish last. Someone found a way to access it on the PC with a bunch of hacks and codes, and it brought forth hellfire and brimstone from Jack Thompson and Hillary Clinton. Kids are having virtual sex with a murder simulator! We must protect America from this polygonal black anti-hero plowing his girlfriend!

If anyone has ever played/watched Grand Theft Auto (as I'm sure almost all of the politicians and lawyers freaking out have not), it should be fairly obvious that the game is not intended for children. It's unashamedly violent and full of cussing, rapping and cop killing. In fact it's rated M for mature (17+), the gaming equivalent of rated R, and it says so clearly on every box and every commercial. So why should this little easter egg (which requires manually rewriting developer's code to unlock and doesn't even look like fun anyway) turn into a national news story, a six-figure fine for Rockstar games, political fodder for presidential hopefuls, a soapbox for conservative lawyers and now a federal investigation? Is American culture so uptight about sex that games like Manhunt and Postal come and go but throw a bit of sauciness into a bestseller and we decide to lose our collective bowels? Not that the answer is to take on every violent or unnecessary media that is released, people just need to realize that there is a big market for adult-oriented gaming, and you can't just go around trying to ban everything that isn't suitable for kids. Hell any 5-year old can go on a computer and in seconds see some real life boobs and dicks if they really wanted to. The only issue I can see is that Rockstar wasn't completely honest with the ESRB (the ratings board) with the content of the game, and they acted pretty arrogant about the mod once it became public knowledge. As a result GTA:San Andreas is being rerated Ao (Adults only, 18+), it's being pulled from stores nationwide until a "clean" version is released, and a federal investigation of Rockstar, Take-Two publishing, the ESRB and most likely the entire gaming industry is forthcoming. Our taxes are paying for this bullshit.

But I'm getting off topic, I wanted to talk about Jack Thompson the ass-hat. This guy decides, hey this video game angle seems like the way to go! So he's making it his personal crusade (possibly in the name of Christ?) to take on the entire gaming industry so he can censor, ban and publicly outcry himself to attorney celebrity. His next target is the relaxing and popular life simulator known as The Sims 2. Did I say relaxing and popular life simulator? I meant sadistic playground for child molestors. Did you know that there are user-created programs out there that will remove the blurries over your Sims' genitalia? To quote Mr. Thompson, "much to the delight, one can be sure, of pedophiles around the globe who can rehearse, in virtual reality, for their abuse." That's right, according to Jack the point of The Sims is to cackle gleefully/masturbate furiously as you command naked Grandpa to tickle and dance with naked Kid Johnny. He wants the game banned or rated for Adults, I really don't know what he wants. But he made up a press release about it and it ticked me off so much I decided to write this overlong essay about the whole ordeal. This is for Mr. Thompson, Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Santorum and other would-be censors of controversial entertainment:

please be sure to visit stopkill.com, Jack Thompson's red white and blue website, in case you too have been hurt by video games and need a lawyer.

(For the record, violence in games doesn't exactly equal mature gaming. Most games that are "controversial" are really just pandering to hyper masculinity and exxtreme badditudes that publishers think older gamers are looking for. GTA and Resident Evil may be fun but alot of the crap out there targeted for adults is insulting and a step back for the industry if it wants to be accepted as a legitimate art form like movies or music. I'd choose a well made Paper Mario or Animal Crossing over the new adult-oriented flavor of the month anytime.)

If you watch one thing on tv this coming Monday, make sure it's

101 THINGS REMOVED FROM THE HUMAN BODY

at 10 p.m. Eastern on TLC. It's one balls-to-the-wall hour of pvc pipes in necks, fishing prongs in faces, rusty nails in stomachs and bicycle pumps in asses. Fun for the whole family! The show is chock full of horrific, real life cringe-inducing stuff. Amazingly all 101 people lived to tell their tale. And they save the most special one for the very end.. I don't want to ruin it, but it is most assuredly the #1 thing that could ever be removed from the human body. Deliciously freaky. One part A Current Affair, one part science class, one part train wreck- thanks, Learning Channel! It's airing Tuesday night as well.

R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet, Chapters 1-5

Saturday, July 16, 2005

Has anyone else had the pleaure to experience this operatic masterpiece? It's been airing recently on vh1, and mankind as a whole is greater for it. Basically R cheats on his wife with some girl he met up at the club, who's husband comes home and catches them and everyone gets upset, R pulls out a gun and they all find out her husband's been cheating on the wife with some guy, so R sings stuff like "this is real deep, i'm bout to walk out that door" then he rushes home cause he thinks his wife is cheating on him and gets a speeding ticket in the process, but *phew* she's alone, it was just her brother on the phone so they have sex but WAIT she really WAS cheating!! R finds a condom when they're having sex and sings things like "Bitch don't make me shoot" in beautiful falsetto, and it turns out that all this time it was the cop who gave him his speeding ticket that was sleeping with his WIFE!!

It's a 5 part epic video, each part is the same exact song (brilliant!) and if you haven't seen it yet, you'll probably really enjoy it/not enjoy it at all/feel unsure as to the degree you enjoyed it.

Also, check out the dashing cover of TP3: Reloaded, the album 'Trapped in the Closet' appears on. Which is #1 on the Billboard charts right now.

Also, R Kelly can't read.

Browse pics and text messages wirelessly on e-paper
Fujitsu has announced the launch of bendy electronic paper that can store and display images wirelessly.

Bendable colour screens have been in the pipeline for some time (see related links), but Fujitsu is the first company to announce a wireless version that it hopes will hit shops sometime between April 2006 and March 2007.

According to Fujitsu its newly developed e-paper features an image memory function that enables “continuous display of the same image without the need for electricity”, although it does require a smidge of power to switch images. Plus, the images don’t warp or lose quality when the e-paper is bent or rolled up.

Fujitsu has even outlined some applications for its smarty-pants paper, including wireless transfer of photos and text messages from mobiles onto the ultra-portable e-paper. Here are just a few other uses it envisages for launch:

It can offer more convenient digital-media devices that can be carried from room to room in the home.
Operating manuals and other short-term information displays, facilitating the trend toward paperless offices or factories.
Electronic shelf display tags, restaurant menus, and other in-store uses. Can also be used for pricing displays or product information displays that stand out in full color and can be readily updated.
Fujitsu is planning to showcase its smarty-pants paper at the Fujitsu Forum 2005 (14-15 July).

bad news

Saturday, July 09, 2005

This story is old, but it's still probably the worst news i've ever read.

The Times of India, June 24 2003
'Fly Boy' Suffers as Doctors Struggle

KOLKATA: A 13-year-old boy whose bizarre ailment has a fly-like insect emerging out of him is far from being cured as doctors struggle to detect the source of the parasite.

The fully-grown flies, as doctors described the parasites, have been emerging out of Chandan Goswami's genitals and flying off for more than two weeks now.

Chandan, now receiving treatment at a state-run hospital in West Bengal's Burdwan district, is said to be suffering from a condition called myiasis, a disease seen mostly in Central and Latin America.

In myiasis, the larvae of a type of fly invade a human or animal body, dead or alive. The deposited eggs can then enter the body through pores, the mucous membrane or even the mouth. The hatched larvae then emerge out the host's skin and pupate.

However, in Chandan's case, whole flies complete with wings are emerging out of his body and flying off.

"This is very, very rare. We are trying to find out how the fly entered the boy's body," says Sudhansu Pan, the surgeon attending Chandan.

Doctors carried out a cystoscopy to clear the boy's urinary tract, but the treatment has failed because two more flies emerged out of his penis on Monday.

Doctors admitted they have not been able to identify where the parasite deposit lay inside Chandan's body.

Health authorities have formed a medical board of seven doctors to treat Chandan. Doctors were also "coordinating" with physicians abroad who have experience in dealing with myiasis.

In myiasis, the maggots usually are found underneath the skin and are removed by minor surgery. But whole flies emerging out of a human body is rare, doctors said.

Chandan told doctors he first felt pain in his abdomen almost a month ago. And then he saw the flies intermittently coming out of his penis.

He told his parents, but they didn't initially believe him. Earlier this month, they saw the strange occurrence and took their son to Burdwan hospital, where doctors too were stunned to see the rare case.

ann peebles - i can't stand the rain.mp3

We're enjoying a good rain in boston today.

So no Olympics in New York 2012. I'm over it, although it just shows how insensitive the international committee is, I mean, remember 9/11?? That was New York, U.S.A.! idiots.

The Fourth of July, America's birthday, happened on Monday. What a holiday, right? We had ourselves a cookout with friends and watched the fireworks from our roof. No sparklers. The choice meat of the day was sausage and the Yankees, America's Team, won the big game. Not enough Toby Keith, though.

Luther Vandross

Saturday, July 02, 2005

Luther Vandross is dead at 54. I'm not a big fan but the man was certainly blessed with a set of pipes and it always sucks to see another R&B giant go. Born in a Harlem project, sang backup for David Bowie, 25 million albums sold worldwide. Your sultry baritone will be missed, good for you on a great career and losing all that weight, even though you were more entertaining as a fatty.
